Weather Talk: Official start to the 2014 hurricane season
(KETK) - Tyler, Tx — June 1 was the beginning of what is expected to be the "below average" 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
Hurricane season runs until November 30. A few weeks ago, the National Hurricane Center released its forecast for the 2014 season.
Tropical Storm & Hurricane Names
Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms had been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. At first, the lists consisted of only female names; however, since 1979, the lists alternate between male and female.
Hurricanes are named alphabetically from the list in chronological order, and excludes names that start with the letters 'Q' or 'U'.
There are six different lists that continue to rotate. The lists will change when there's a hurricane that is destructive, the name is retired and another name replaces it (i.e.: Andrew, Ike, Rita, & Wilma).
